best gaming keyboard 2021

If you’re looking to have the most complete and immersive gaming experience is a proper keyboard. Gaming keyboards are obviously much different from the standard and conventional ones so if you don’t know what you should be looking for we’ve taken the liberty of handpicking the best gaming keyboards you can find here below.

Gaming keyboards are a bit like a key: you use the right one and you can unlock any door but use the wrong one and you’ll find it harder to achieve the same result. Here we explain everything you need to know about gaming keyboards and regardless of whether you’re brand new to PC gaming or been at it for years. Below we prepare a list of the best gaming keyboards recommendations that should help you in your buying decision.

Before we go to the best gaming keyboards, know the gaming keyboard specifications, features, and types. There are three types of keyboards and each uses a different switch under each key to register your desired action. The switches of the keyboard have the biggest impact on the way that a keyboard feels and how quick and responsive it can be in heated gaming scenarios.

The most common are membrane keyboards and underneath every keycap, you’ll find a rubber dome. They’re very much cheap and cheerful but they’re not the best for gaming. They often require the key to be pressed all the way down before they send a command to the computer and this feeling is quite spongy in the process.

Mechanical keyboards though are the choice of most-gamer because they’re physical switches underneath. Every single key gives you an increased level of feedback and a little bit easier. Key presses are that little bit snappier and there’s a nice smooth transition from the top of the key.

All the way to the bottom each type of mechanical key switch will have its own individual characteristics though most can be described as clicky tactile or linear. Techno switches such as chair MX browns have a bump as you press the key which gives you a physical level of feedback that the keypress has been registered.

Linear switches are slightly faster to use which is great for gaming but arguably slightly detrimental to typing cherry blue and Razer switches. On the other hand, are what’s known as clicky with an audible click upon reaching the actuation point or the point in which the keypress is registered.

This will help your typing but the extra bit of force needed to activate and double press keys might put gamers off. In addition to the fact that frankly, it’s ridiculously loud.

If you’re looking at low profile keyboard then chances are you’ll be looking at a Chiclet-style keyboard. These slim keys with a very small amount of travel and they lock any sort of feedback other than bottoming out. For typing there are great but they lack any real substance for gaming scenarios.

If you’re looking at a gaming keyboard though chances are you’ll find some form of RGB lighting. You’ll come across the latest innovation in the keyboard space r2blighting. It won’t do anything for your fortnight survival but it can make your desk look real pretty.

It should be noted that it will add a lot of extra cost to the keyboard. Now it’s still quite new but if you’re looking at specifically a gaming keyboard you can now get them in wireless flavors.

In short three things you should keep in mind during the buying of a new gaming keyboard, the performance, mechanical switches of the keyboard, and last is a wired keyboard or wireless keyboard. The wireless keyboard comes with a battery that can be charged and the wired keyboard comes with a cable.

All of these things take a look to decide what it is that you want from the look of your keyboard and that’s something to consider before you purchase. After a look at the keyboard specification and their feature, the final decision comes to end your budget or your affordability. A good budget is obviously going to determine what it is you can actually get.

Lighting has always been a strong point for the K95. The board is controlled with their IQ software which remains mostly exactly the same as before. Although they did introduce one minor improvement with this release in the form of debouncing delay that reduces double strokes. On the 19th out the light bar at the top of the board makes a return same with the RGB-enabled logo and media.

4-Corsair K100 RGB Optical

Corsair K100 RGB Optical
Corsair K100 RGB Optical

Starting as always with construction and design the Corsair K100 at first glance doesn’t look too different than the k95 platinum. But the further you dig in it becomes pretty obvious that this keyboard has been revamped and improved in every aspect of its design. The keyboard size is the same as its previous model and still sports that classy brushed aluminum top plate.

On the sides of the keyboard, we’ve got some nice molded accents that add a little bit of structural support as well as just a little bit of a stylistic pop. The Corsair K100 comes with a detachable magnetic wrist rest which is padded and wrapped in a textured leatherette. This wrist dress is by far the nicest one that corsair has ever put out and maybe any other gaming company for that matter.

The wrist rest feels premium and nice to use. My only concern here is with the texture it does tend to pick up extra dust and debris pretty easily. As you may find yourself needing to clean it more than you typically would.

In terms of branding, we do have an RGB sales logo in the top center of the board and a mystery IQ logo over in the top left. The sales logo in the top center of the board. They’re super clean and clear when lit and totally invisible when not in use. The underside has large rubberized pads, single-step extendable legs, and a six-way cable channel.

In terms of lighting the Corsair K100 packs in the most RGB ever for a corsair keyboard having full perky RGB on everything. Even the dedicated media macro keys and all other buttons. There are also 44 zones of edge lighting on the k100 to broadcast some ambient light on your desk.

According to experience, the edge lighting does a really good job at providing a cool ambient effect without being super distracting and in your face like the k95 platinum was. This time around all RGB enabled lights will participate in animated effects so you won’t have any weird static lights like the profile or windows lock buttons. All Corsair RGB products use IQ to control the lights.

One of the less obvious new features of the Corsair K100 is their axon hyper processor. This is essentially the brains of the keyboard. The axon processor allows for four times the throughput of a traditional gaming keyboard providing up to four thousand hertz polling rate for lighting fast connectivity over USB 2. The axon chip also allows for saving up to 200 onboard profiles depending on how intricate they are.

The Corsair K100 is available in two switch types right now, a cherry MX speed variation and also Corsair’s new proprietary linear optical OPX switch. The OPX switch is Corsair’s first entry into a proprietary gaming switch. It’s a linear switch with an ultra-fast actuation of one millimeter and a total travel of 3.2 millimeters. It’s a light switch requiring a 45-gram actuation force and it’s guaranteed to last 150 million keystrokes.

The switches feel nice and smooth to type and game on to, according to the experience they’re noticeably less scratchy. Then cherry linear switches can be the super short actuation distance means that these switches only need to be pressed one millimeter to register them making them fast and responsive.

But it is also easy to accidentally hit a key, particularly with how light the switches are at 45 grams. This makes them feel quick and nimble for gaming but you will definitely have to learn to clean up your typing as you probably will have some typos for a while when you’re getting used to them.

Corsair has been doing a really good job of listening to the community. As a result, this board featured PBT double-shot keycaps but they’ve done away with their controversial large font and replaced it with a nice clean simple font. Another change that was made to the board is that the spacebars no longer have that irritating diamond plate texture.

Corsair brought back a lot of their flagship extras with the k100 like the row of six dedicated macro keys which also have stream deck integration with IQ. The dedicated media keys are back this time slightly redesigned with a more raised profile. The textured aluminum volume roller feels super premium on this version.

There’s also a USB pass-through at the back of the board. This is also designed to work with IQ nexus as well. Probably the coolest new addition to this keyboard is the IQ control wheel. This versatile wheel comes with bound four-function by default. You can also control the brightness of the keyboard.

The brightness of the keyboard rewind or fast forward media uses it for selecting tracks or onboard macro recording. Once you combine this with IQ though you can use it for things like app switching, zooming vertical or horizontal scrolling, or create anything you could imagine in-game and also for productivity applications.

The action on the dial is smooth with a light tactile feeling that also gives you a little bit of an audible sound and overall feels pretty nice to use. Clicking the center button will change between functions on the dial and it will change colors to reflect which mode it’s in.

Corsair K100 is pretty cool, considering all the improvements in the new font, better stabilizers, optical switches, nicer wrist rest control wheel, sleek design, lighting fast axon processor, this list goes on, simply this is what a flagship gaming keyboard looks like.

Pros
  • Macro control buttons
  • USB pass-through
  • Wrist rest support
  • Comfortable to use
  • Great backlighting effect
Cons
  • Limited stream deck support
  • OPX Optical Switches

5-SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL

SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL
SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL

The SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL introduces new features as well as brand new switches to the steel series lineup. The main interest from this keyboard is coming from the integrated OLED screen and their new Omni point analog switches.

SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL physically it doesn’t look you know too out of the ordinary it’s your standard layout you got RGB backlighting as you’d expect.

We also have an attachable risk for us which is included. It’s a very soft rubber-like texture that doesn’t have any sort of cushioning or anything like that but it is a soft material. On the bottom, the keyboard itself has an aluminum alloy frame with plastic.

In terms of those features, the new editions of the OLED screen and a multimedia wheel next to it pressing that illuminated menu button below gives you access to the menu you can go in and adjust things like the RGB lighting on the board for picking through the effects to static colors.

In this keyboard, they add more functionality with the OLED screen coming down the line, you also import graphics and gifts, it adds a little bit more personalization to your board. On the backside to the left of the keyboard have USB pass-through for plugging in stuff like peripherals flash drives and all that stuff.

When it is powered on it’s going to illuminate white since the keyboard terminates in the two USB, you have both plugged into your PC to power this additional pass-through. At the bottom of the board have to flip out feet and three cable routing channels to wrap the cable out the center-left or right side. It just makes it easier and more tightly on your desktop, so you can wrap that cable to the side that’s closest to your PC.

The main thing about the keyboard selling point is the Omni point switches. With the help of that switch, you can customize the key actuation. This is all done through magnets and also this software and each key can be controlled individually. These are linear switches and are very smooth. From a point of four millimeters, they’re adjustable to actuate in.

In comparison, the standard switches of the keyboard are actually at two millimeters, and the cherry speed switch of the keyboard is actually at one point two millimeters. So, the point four-millimeter distance at the highest setting does make this the fastest switch on the market. It ranges then to three-point six millimeters if you’re used to bottoming out your key or just prefer that longer travel distance.

This is going to give you a competitive advantage in-game, once you use it, you can get that higher actuation point, you can definitely feel that you are moving and stuff in-game quicker because it is actually waiting faster. The customization functions of the keyboard control through software.

The Omni point switches of the keyboard are very cool. They are very linear switches so they’re just extremely smooth. They just felt very buttery smooth again having that whole flexibility to change your actuation distance with one key is cool for those out there who could utilize it.

The OLED screen of the keyboard is definitely cool to have like a secondary kind of metering things for certain games integration. It’s a solid keyboard and very linear switch that allows users to play games more accurately, quickly, and confidently.

Pros
  • Quick keys response
  • Awsome lighting
  • USB pass-through
  • Aluminum build
  • Programmable RGB lighting
  • Fine actuation point
  • Great build quality
Cons
  • Little OLED screen
  • No dedicated macro key
  • Pricey

In this board, Corsair includes the texture FPS and MOBA keycap sets as well as a keycap removal tool. The M K2 also comes with detachable palm rest to add comfort and support. The additional support of the keyboard for palm rest makes it more comfortable.
